Every year on 13 May, the global FM community pauses to celebrate the profession. This year’s official theme is:

“FM: Cultivating Belonging Through Built Environments” – Global FM / IFMA, World FM Day 2026

It’s a reminder that FM is about far more than maintenance schedules and work orders. It’s about people.

The most important job nobody talks about

Think about the last time you walked into a building and felt completely comfortable – the temperature was right, the lights worked, the space felt clean and safe. You probably didn’t think twice about it. That’s FM done well.

Behind every hospital ward, school classroom, corporate office, shopping centre, and community facility is an FM professional making hundreds of decisions a day – most of which nobody ever sees. Compliance checks. Preventive maintenance. Emergency callouts at 6am. Asset inspections. The invisible infrastructure of everyday life.

When it works, nobody notices. When it doesn’t, everyone does.

Belonging is a building condition
